Novell’s Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) Curriculum into College’s Computer
Networking and Technical Support Program
College faculty trains
students and Ontario high school teachers
MARKHAM, Ontario – January 25, 2000 – Novell Canada Ltd., the leader in Net infrastructure software, today announced that Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology in Toronto has become a Novell Education Academic Partner (NEAP), allowing the college to teach Novell-authorized courses as part of its diploma or certificate programs. The largest NEAP in Canada, Seneca College will integrate Novell’s Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) curriculum into the college’s Computer Networking and Technical Support Program, offered to both full-time and continuing education students. Students can take Novell-authorized courses, obtain Novell certification and apply it towards graduation. This partnership between Novell and Seneca will provide students with access to leading-edge enterprise, network and e-commerce solutions training.
Seneca College will also become an Internal Campus Training (ICT) NEAP, where its faculty will train Ontario high school teachers in Novell certification programs. This makes Seneca the first educational institution offering Novell certification programs for teachers across multiple school boards.
"With the launch of the Seneca@York Campus of Advanced Technology and its Internet Commerce & Technology Institute, Seneca College has demonstrated its dedication to providing future generations of students with an integrated set of skills necessary for success in the new global economy," said Don Chapman, vice-president and general manager, Novell Canada Ltd. "Our partnership with Seneca College will allow students to get hands-on experience in the networking environment, fully preparing them for the high-tech workforce of tomorrow."
The $55-million Seneca@York campus, which opened its doors in May 1999, serves 3,500 students enrolled in Seneca’s School of Communication Arts, School of Computer Studies, School of Biological Sciences and Applied Chemistry, and Centre for Professional Communications. The campus was conceived as a response to the call by business, students and government for closer ties among post-secondary educational institutions and the private sector.
The college’s new Internet Commerce & Technology Institute offers high-quality education, focused training and practical research in electronic commerce. Its post-graduate education program provides a foundation for professional work in e-commerce. Graduates will have an area of specialization, with a practicum that is undertaken on-the-job. This will be an in-service program for working managers, using industry mentors, with the first-year students admitted in Summer 2000.
"Seneca College prides itself on offering students a wide variety of platforms and then building upon that fundamental education through industry-specific curriculum and software," said Jocelyn Piercy, Senior Chair, School of Computer Studies, Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology. "The Novell Education Academic Partner program enables our Computer Networking and Technical Support students to receive the best of both worlds – a broad-based college education and leading edge training from an industry leader. It’s this successful combination that will open the most doors for our students."
"The Novell partnership provides our students with the latest technology on the market while offering our faculty the opportunity to stay current with technology trends and pass on that knowledge to Ontario high school teachers," said Tony Tanner, Dean, Faculty of Technology, Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology. "By becoming a Novell Education Academic Partner, Seneca College is able to achieve its goal of providing well-trained information technology professionals to the Canadian marketplace."
The Novell Education Academic Partner Post-Secondary Program is designed to help both post-secondary schools and students. Schools benefit from the NEAP program through:
